How do I go about finding an independent living communities that I know will be a good experience for my dad?

We went through this recently and found that actually visiting a few places and talking to current residents made a big difference. Reviews only tell you so much. We also got some guidance from a nonprofit that helps families sort through independent living options without being pushy, Hart Heritage Estate was helpful for us. It made the process feel a lot less overwhelming.
